The Fire at Cedar Park

The Big Fire at Krom Rivier, Cederberg Park captures the raw intensity of a wildfire through an atmospheric, impressionistic lens. Inspired by a photograph taken by the artist’s brother, the scene is built outward from a smoke-diffused sun, using thick, expressive oil paint to convey heat, light, and movement. Silhouetted figures along the horizon suggest both vulnerability and resilience, while a distant helicopter with a suspended water bucket introduces a sense of urgency and human intervention. Rich textures and a restrained palette of smoky greys, burnt reds, and warm ochres create a powerful contrast between destruction and beauty. This work reflects on the fragile balance between humanity and nature, inviting quiet contemplation within a moment of chaos.
