Joseph Adolphe was born in Calgary, Canada, and received his MFA in New York City, where he continues to live and work. His paintings have been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. Adolphe’s practice explores the relationship between the visible world and deeper metaphysical experience. His diverse subjects—from landscapes and still lifes to animals and figures poised before moments of confrontation—reflect an ongoing meditation on idealism, mortality, resilience, and the forces that shape human experience. His paintings of landscapes with messages floating across the sky emerged from an intuitive fascination with a simple image. Over time, these works evolved into deeply personal reflections on dreaming, hope, contentment, and the persistence required to sustain an optimistic vision of life. His still lifes similarly carry this sense of contemplation and possibility. In contrast, his paintings of animals and people anticipating combat explore tension, vulnerability, and mortality. Rather than depicting the contest itself, Adolphe captures the moment before it—the heightened state of readiness in which strength, uncertainty, and fate coexist. Together, these bodies of work reflect his belief that the physical world can reveal something beyond itself, giving form to both the tangible and the unseen forces that shape our lives. Adolphe is also a Professor in the Department of Art and Design at St. John’s University in New York City, where he teaches drawing and painting.
