Statement
For more than three decades, Kane Dyer has explored the space between the personal and the universal. His practice demonstrates an enduring interest in identity, belonging, vulnerability, change and our relationship with the world. Figurative elements remain present but are not simply descriptive. Simplified, displaced, fragmented or partially obscured, they become part of a broader visual language in which colour, shape, line and composition carry equal weight. Abstract passages create an environment where images shift between the familiar and the unknown, giving the work its distinctive visual tension and poetic quality. Dyer’s practice is both narrative-driven and metaphysical. Stories, memories and ideas undergo metamorphosis through the process of drawing, bringing personal experience into dialogue with cultural memory, environmental concerns, theological ideas and the history of painting. Meaning remains fluid and open, shaped by relationships between figures, forms and abstract colour fields. Opposing ideas coexist throughout the work: destruction and renewal, vulnerability and resilience, memory and transformation, the personal and the collective. Rather than resolving these tensions, Dyer allows them to shape the viewer’s experience. For Dyer, painting is a way of exploring experience without reducing it to certainty.
