02 · The story
From a seventeenth-century Bible, sunflowers sprout in all stages of their existence: from fresh germ to heavy, wilting flower head. The Bible literally forms the breeding ground for a cycle of rise and fall. The interior of the 17th-century canal house alludes to the wealth and rock-solid faith of the Golden Age. But the dark side—colonial exploitation and missionary zeal—crumbles that foundation. Just as parchment decays, so too are dogmas and accumulated wealth unable to withstand the ravages of time. The wilting flowers reflect that fragility and make room for a new beginning. What new seed sprouts from the compost of our past once the old finally decays?
