Art begins where words fall silent. My work begins with a fascination for what moves us as human beings — what connects us, what gives our lives meaning, and what remains beyond the reach of language. I am an artist and child and adolescent psychiatrist, living and working in the Netherlands. Since my first exhibition in 1989, I have worked continuously on independent, project-based bodies of work. Drawing is at the heart of my practice. It is both a way of looking and a way of discovering. I am interested in the fragile space between the inner and outer world: between human experience and nature, between the visible and the unseen, between presence and mystery. My recent work has become deeply personal. It comes from a profound gratitude for being alive and for being part of the world. Rather than illustrating an idea, I allow the work to emerge through an intuitive process of looking, responding and making. The resulting images are traces of that encounter — intimate, searching and open to interpretation. My projects often grow out of a particular place, a person, or a question. Recent commissions include work for a nursing home and Drawing for Alkmaar, presented in the historic Grote Kerk of Alkmaar in 2025. My work has also been shown through Dutch art routes including Kunstschouw in Renesse, Zeeland, and Kunst10daagse in Bergen, North Holland. I do not seek to explain the world through my art. I seek to encounter it — and to make visible something of the wonder, vulnerability and grace of being alive.
