h_Artzaken; image, word, presence. Hi! My name is Elise Smits. Creating is essential to me. It keeps me connected to myself, my inner world and my intuition. It allows me to express the love and gratitude I carry within. I call it artfulness. For me, it is a way of life, filled with creativity and color, giving me the space to create and share meaning through image, word and form. I enjoy working with a variety of materials. Acrylic paint and mixed media allow me to express what I feel and experience. I like trusting the process, experimenting with the materials and discovering what emerges beneath my hands, until I simply know the work is finished. My acrylic and mixed media pieces are layered, rich in contrast and texture. I work with modelling paste, small stones, sand, acrylic paint, water and ecoline. I also enjoy working with watercolors, colored pencils, markers and fine liners, and occasionally gouache. These materials find their way into my illustrations and drawings, which are often delicate and gentle, yet always full of color. I write (Dutch) poems inspired by my paintings, or create illustrations inspired by one of my poems. Sometimes I use words and fragments from old books to compose new poetic texts. Perhaps I don't have one fixed style, yet you can discover my signature and my way of experiencing the world in my work. I first started painting as a way of expressing my emotions after a profound loss. Today, one of the greatest gifts is that my work touches people and brings them joy. Hai! Mijn naam is Elise Smits. Voor mij is creëren een must. Het helpt me om in contact met mezelf, mijn innerlijke wereld en mijn weten te blijven. Het helpt om uiting te geven aan de liefde en dankbaarheid die ik vanbinnen voel. Ik noem het artfulness. Het is voor mij een manier van leven, vol creativiteit en kleur, die me de gelegenheid biedt om in beelden, woorden en vormen betekenis te geven en te delen. Ik werk met verschillende materialen. Ik vind acrylverf en mixed media fijn om uitdrukking te geven aan wat ik voel en ervaar. Ik houd ervan om te vertrouwen op het proces van het materiaal en wat er vanuit experimenteren onder mijn handen ontstaat. Tot het punt dat ik weet dat het af is. Mijn acryl en mixed media week is gelaagd, vol contrast en structuur. Ik speel o.a. met pasta, steentjes, zand, acrylverf, water en ecoline. Ook gebruik ik graag aquarelverf, potloden, stiften en fineliners. En af en toe gouache. Hiermee maak ik illustraties en tekeningen. Vaak lieflijk en zacht, altijd kleurrijk. Ik schrijf gedichten bij mijn schilderijen of maakillustraties bij een van mijn gedichten. Af en toe gebruik ik teksten/woorden uit oude boeken om daarmee gedichtjes samen te stellen. Misschien heb ik niet perse een vaste stijl, toch kun je in mijn werk mijn handtekening en beleving ontdekken. Ik startte ooit met schilderen om uiting te geven aan mijn emoties na een groot verlies. Nu vind ik het erg fijn dat mijn werk mensen raakt en blij maakt.
