Artist Statement Faye creates vibrant, colourful paintings in an Expressive style exploring the interplay of colour, texture and form in local seascapes and the landscape she encounters on her travels. Biography Faye began painting in early childhood developing a lasting interest in landscape and seascape shaped by the Scottish environment in which she was raised. Her practice has long been informed by close observation of the natural world, with a particular focus on the unusual, the intimate and the detailed. Growing up amidst the hills and mountains of Scotland’s west coast encouraged her to engage with the region’s dramatic and imposing scenery, including Ben Lomond and the surrounding areas of Loch Lomond. Working in a semi-abstract expressive style, Faye employs a diverse range of media including acrylic, silk paint, watercolour and ink. Her work reveals a commitment to colour, evident in the vibrancy of her compositions. Through fluid, gestural brushstrokes and the careful layering of paint, she explores the form and texture of her subject matter, seeking to convey its essence and vitality. Faye holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, and spent her professional career teaching Art and Design within Secondary Education. She was deeply committed to sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for Art and Design, supporting young people in the development of their creative abilities. Her teaching practice encompassed Art, Design, Photography and Ceramics. She introduced pupils to clay work using hand building techniques, including the creation of figurative works and self portrait busts. Faye played a key role in establishing the Higher Photography Course at Douglas Academy, Milngavie, where she co-authored and delivered the programme. Alongside her teaching career, Faye continued to develop her own artistic practice, expanding her skills in painting, photography, design and ceramics. In 2015 Faye bought a home in the East Neuk of Fife where she established a dedicated studio. Living by the coast proved pivotal to her artistic development, enabling her to fully immerse herself in producing work inspired by the local seascape, harbours, boats, seaweed and crustaceans. With time to devote fully to her practice, her creative output intensified, driven by a deepening engagement with the coastal environment. She is particularly drawn to the ever changing light, shifting weather conditions and the dramatic effects of the tide and wave. Regular early morning walks along the beach and harbour continue to provide sustained inspiration for her work. Faye has exhibited widely, participating in East Neuk Open Studios and Pittenweem Arts Festival, and showing work at The Bowhouse, Kayartonline and The Lillie Gallery. She also contributes to the wider artistic community through demonstrations and workshops. Travel remains an important inspiration for Faye. She has drawn extensively from her experiences in Italy, Spain, Iceland and Greece, responding to the distinctive light and atmosphere of these locations. These influences have expanded her repertoire and continue to inform new bodies of work.
