I was born in 1952 and raised in Catasauqua, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania. My artistic interests and nonconformist nature made me eager to explore beyond its boundaries. I studied at Kutztown College and with New York artist Marion Pinto. At Barnstone Studios, I worked within a master and apprentice tradition that emphasized the Golden Section and classical approaches to drawing and painting. I also participated in art and movement therapy sessions at Jessup Prison outside Baltimore, an experience that broadened my understanding of how people engage with art. I now live in Philadelphia. My work has been shown at Sande Webster Gallery and Vox Populi, as well as galleries in Tennessee, Texas, Massachusetts, and Austria. It is held in private and corporate collections in Athens, London, Dubai, and throughout the northeastern United States. My paintings draw on Impressionism, Modernism, and Pointillism. I build them through small, individual brushstrokes and the placement of one color beside another. As the eye moves across a painting, its colors and forms seem to shift. I am especially interested in the relationship between figure and ground. By allowing them to meet and sometimes become difficult to distinguish, I leave room for viewers to find their own way into the work. Painting is my search for stillness. It gives me a way to step away from the noise and constant information of daily life, and from the inner dialogue that can make calm so elusive. I work slowly and pay attention to the space around each form as carefully as I do to the form itself. I hope a painting offers viewers that same chance to slow down: a place to look closely, reflect, and return to what feels essential. —Keith R. Breitfeller
